Nonetheless he honored the brilliant man only to discover that doubling in this manner he could not fulfill his promise, for the entire kingdom would run out rice before he was able to fill all of the board spaces. Again, the king laughed, but this time in awe of the sheer genius of this request.

The mathematic argument has always been prominent throughout the history chess, but it develops many other cognitive faculties as well.  Maybe this is what creates its fanatical draw.  Books have been written about the way that chess plays on our most intimate human experiences and aids in our understanding of emotion.  Truth, beauty, justice, honor, betrayal, surprise, and many other emotional capacities are experience in a single match of chess.
