Setting up a chess board:
There are total 16 pawns, 4 rooks, 4 knights, 4 bishops, 2 queens, and 2 kings in
a chess game. The basic and foremost thing is to place the chess board correctly. The best rule to remember while setting up a chess board is
"White on right". Keep in mind the lower right handed corner of each player should be
white.
Now you have to choose either black or white pieces for yourself and the other color will
definitely be with the opposite player. Now you have to set the pieces; firstly the pieces are placed on the
line closest to each player.
Placing the Rooks (shaped as small towers)
The first step is to set the rooks on the board; place the 4 rooks in the four squares and if
your chess board has coordinates then place the white rooks on it and black rook on 8 ranks.
Placing the Knights (shaped as horseÕs head)
Now as 2nd step you need to place the knights next to the rooks according to the
color.
Placing the Bishops
Now place the bishops next to the Knights but keep in mind the color combination here as
well.
Placing the Queens
This is the 2nd tallest piece and should be placed next to the bishops; but here again consider
the color combination. If you are playing on board that has coordinates then place both queen on d-file.
Placing the Kings
This is the tallest piece in chess and you can see the cross right on it head. So place the king
next to the queen according to the color and if your chess board has coordinates then put both kings on
e-file.
Placing the Pawns
These are the shortest pieces in height and you need eight white and eight black pawns in chess.
Place the pawns in the next row according to the color and if you have board with coordinates then put the white
ones on 2nd rank whereas the black ones on 7th rank.
So keep in mind the above mentioned rules while setting up a chess board to make sure you have done it correct!
